Cancer
Prof K Thyagaraju, the present Head of Biochemistry, is selected as member to the American Chemical society, for the year 2010 to 2011. Earlier its President has nominated him to ACS and at present he joined in that prestigious group. Dr Thyagaraju, a recipient of PhD from Pennsylvania State University, was serving the department since 1982 as Assistant, Associate (1995) and Professor (2003 onwards). In his academic career he published more than fifty papers in reputed journals and presented his work in more than 50 National and International conferences. He served as Principal Investigator on about nine projects funded by CSIR, DST, HRRD, UGC and ICMR. He has guided 18 PhD graduates in the department and at present under his guidance working more than 10 PhD graduates. His research work was mainly concerned on cancer biology markers and cell damage determination. The major achievement of his research is isolation of an immunomodulatory, a patentable, molecule from neem seed kernel. Further he is member and Honorary Secretary of Society of Biological Chemists of India and also member of Nutritional Society of India. Besides of all these he served as Director of Admissions, Liaison officer on welfare schemes of University, convenor of UCIC in Golden Jubilee celebrations, Chairman and member of various state and university committees, and at present serving as Academic Council member of Central University of Tamilnadu.
